The Medi-Clinic

  The Medi-Clinic
Medi-Clinic is one of the largest private hospital groups in the world with extensive interests in South Africa, Namibia, Switzerland and Dubai.

THE MEDI-CLINIC private hospital group is widely regarded as the embodiment of a South African company rising to the challenges of an ever-changing industry; firmly establishing itself as a top performing company, and extending its service excellence into the international arena.

Medi-Clinic celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2008, commemorating an entrepreneurial move that led to the establishment of one of South Africa’s three largest private hospital groups. The company has been listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) since 1986 with a total market capitalization of R170 million (Dh61.28 million). It had four hospitals with 691 beds, and another three hospitals with 688 beds under construction.

These early developments paved the way for a rapid expansion of its hospital facilities through acquisitions and also construction of new hospitals. Since those first couple of months, when Dr Edwin Hertzog (founder and today the chairman of the Medi-Clinic Corporation) practically ran the company from the boot of his car, Medi-Clinic has grown into a multinational company with 48 hospitals in South Africa plus one under construction in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs, 13 in Switzerland, three in Namibia, two in Dubai, and six clinics in the United Arab Emirates.

Medi-Clinic owns 50 per cent plus one share of Emirates Healthcare Holdings. In October 2007, Medi- Clinic acquired a 100 per cent interest in the largest provider of private medical services in Switzerland — Hirslanden, a multi-specialty hospital group operating 13 clinics from Lake Constance to Lake Geneva, with 1,295 beds and more than 100 centres of competence.

The group has enjoyed solid and consistent growth and boasts an impressive financial track record. Today the market capitalization is in the region of R11 billion (Dh3.97 billion) and there are more than 66 hospitals with more than 8,500 beds throughout the network.
