THE VARKEY GROUP began when Sunny Varkey assumed responsibility for ‘Our Own English High School’ from his parents in 1980. Through acumen, vision, and dynamic leadership, he transformed this one school into an international enterprise, the Varkey Group, with divisions in education, healthcare and construction.
As an education and social entrepreneur, Sunny Varkey has perfected the synthesis of quality education and efficient business redefining the traditional concept of education. Nearly three decades ago, as a pioneer in the field, he predicted that private education would become the major driving force of the education industry in the future. Sunny Varkey’s belief that market-driven education delivers higher standards of education is a sentiment that is echoed by governments, private enterprises and societies around the world.
In response to the need for expertise in the private education sector, Sunny Varkey, under the umbrella of the Varkey Group, established an international network of private schools, GEMS. GEMS own a growing international network of schools that provide high-quality education. GEMS also provide “total-solution” management for schools, a rapidly expanding area of the business. Benefiting from the network’s years of experience in result-oriented, quality education, GEMS combines professional expertise and experience with a holistic, value-added approach to education that nurtures academic excellence and now is truly world-wide with four different entities – GEMS UK, GEMS Americas, GEMS PREACH, and GEMS MENASA.
In 1998, Sunny Varkey expanded the Varkey Group’s profile to include healthcare. The Welcare Hospital, a-state-of-the-art medical facility, inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Deputy Ruler and Minister of Finance, was the first hospital outside the US to have lab facilities certified by John Hopkins University. Sunny Varkey’s continued commitment to quality medical practices and personalized patient care eventually led to Welcare Hospital being honored with the Dubai Quality Appreciation Programme Certificate 2000, presented by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Under the construction branch of the Varkey Group is the independent construction and facilities management firm, Chicago Maintenance Company, whose construction arm is being renamed SAMMON VG. The facilities management firm provides full service facilities management for a variety of clients and employs over 500 experienced technicians and specialists.
